Mark Morris does have his detractors who complain about the American choreographer’s obsession with music, and how every beat and accent is predictably translated into a danced equivalent. One need only look at the third and final program of the Mark Morris Dance Group at the Luminato Festival to see how very different “music made visible” can be.

The two Brahms works, New Love Song Waltzes and Love Song Waltzes are rounded and curved in choreographic vocabulary as they gently explore themes of love and loss. Grand Duo to a Lou Harrison sonata, on the other hand, is fierce and shamanistic – the quintessential expression of tribalism and ritual.

Costumes for the company should be mentioned. In all three programs, each dancer was uniquely dressed, which enhances an individual’s role within the group, a signature of Morris’ choreography.

On a final note, the Mark Morris Dance Group always performs to live music which makes the company unique in the modern dance world.
