Eric McCormack on ‘Will & Grace’, Quarantine & Sondheim

Station Blog2021-10-7By: Mark Wigmore

After considerable delay, it’s finally happening! The Royal Conservatory of Music is presenting Sondheim’s Follies at Koerner Hall on Saturday, October 16th, and Sunday, October 17th. It’s a gala presentation that will launch an ambitious live and in-person concert season and celebrate 91 years of Sondheim. The show is being directed by Richard Ouzounian.

Follies is Sondheim’s complicated love letter to the lavish Ziegfeld Follies revues that took place between 1907 and 1936. It’s been a hit all over the world since its debut in 1971 on Broadway. It has won Tonys, Oliviers, and Drama Desk Awards.

This star-studded Koerner Hall presentation will feature a who’s who of the Canadian star system including Cynthia Dale, Marcus Nance, Mary Lou Fallis, Ben Heppner, Jackie Richardson, and many many others…. this man as well.

Eric McCormack grew up a theatre kid here in Toronto, went on to Stratford, and then moved to film and television. By the mid-eighties, he landed a musical film role in The Boys from Syracuse and continued his career with characters in Street Justice and Lonesome Dove. He came close to landing a role in a series titled Friends but instead was given the part of Will Truman in the groundbreaking network comedy Will & Grace. The program earned Eric and Emmy and has enjoyed two successful runs on television. McCormack debuted on Broadway in 2001 and has continued to make stage appearances. Other TV and film projects include Atypical, Travelers, Perception, and Pound Puppies.

Eric McCormack spoke to Mark Wigmore on the Oasis about his experiences during the lockdown, the cultural relevance of Will & Grace the second time around, and his vivid Sondheim memories. He also previews his portrayal of Buddy for the upcoming Royal Conservatory Gala. Listen here:

Follies features an all-star cast of Canadian theatrical icons and orchestra performing the legendary masterpiece considered by many to be the greatest musical ever created. Surreal, sophisticated, compelling, heart wrenching, and epic in scope, including hit songs “Losing My Mind,” “I’m Still Here,” and “Broadway Baby.” Only at Koerner Hall.
