Superstar Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason joins The Oasis

Station Blog2022-4-29By: Mark Wigmore

Brother and sister duo, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason & pianist Isata Kannah Mason, are about to make their Toronto debut at Koerner Hall on Friday, May 6th, 2022. The appearance is one of the most anticipated classical music events of the season.

Another first, Sheku Kanneh-Mason joined The New Classical FM’s Oasis program with host Mark Wigmore.

The Nottingham, England native is one of the most exciting talents within the classical music world.

Sheku grew up surrounded by music, and siblings. 7 children in all, all of which are musically inclined. After a brief brush with the violin, he was taken with the rich tones of the cello and was noted early for this talent early on. He was able to play from memory in grade school, and would go on to scholarships, awards, and later, The Royal Academy of Music.

The Kanneh-Mason story found new heights in 2015 after a family appearance on Britain’s Got Talent television program. The year following, Sheku won the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year Award.

By 2018, he had joined the groundbreaking Chineke! Orchestra and signed a major recording deal with Decca Classics. Later that year, the millions who had enjoyed his energy and tone as a performer, changed to billions. His album Inspiration topped the classical charts in the UK and pushed into the Top 20 of the pop charts for good measure. It was also the year that Royals Harry and Megan were wed, and Sheku Kanneh-Mason was invited to perform.

In the years since he released Elgar in 2020, and in 2021, a long-awaited recording from Sheku and his sister, pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason, titled Muse. The album features works from Barber and Rachmaninoff.
