This week: Johann Nepomuk Hummel.
This virtuoso pianist was the last of his generation, before the clean discipline and balance of the Classical era gave way to the tempestuous likes of Romantic Franz Liszt. A child prodigy, he was taken under Mozart’s wing and given free lessons for 2 years. When he flew the coup, he would wow audiences with improvisations, and with the virtuosic compositions he left behind.
