I finally caught up with the little musical that could – My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding – and the adorable show certainly deserves the hype.
The story is based on writer/composer David Hein’s mother Claire, who left her husband in Saskatchewan to find her true self in Ottawa. Hein and his wife Irene Carl Sankoff wrote the delightful book, and Hein composed the songs, a tuneful mix of country, folk and rock. Some of the lyrics are absolutely hilarious.
Old pro Lisa Horner is a knock-out as Claire, and while the acting of the rest of the cast is a little uneven, director Andrew Lamb compensates with clever, economical staging. Hein is all charm as the singing narrator, with Kyle Orzech doing an out-standing job as Young David.
You’ll have a smile on your face from the beginning to the end.
My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding continues at the Panasonic Theatre until Jan. 3, returning Feb. 26.
