The Nottawasaga Lighthouse: A Beacon of Beauty on Georgian Bay

Collingwood News2015-11-2By: Classical Staff

There is something majestic about a Lighthouse that evokes romantic imagery of sailors returning home through the heavy fog and spotting the beacon to guide them to warmth and dry land.

One of the most beautiful landmarks on Georgian Bay is the Nottawasaga Island Lighthouse, which is still used as a navigational aid for boaters.

The lighthouse stands as testament to the long local history of the shipping port town. Now a heritage site, The Nottawasaga Lighthouse was first lit in 1858, the year the Town of Collingwood became incorporated. It features a number of unique architectural characteristics such as impressive and intricate masonry construction, a corbelled gallery, handsome cast iron lantern, lion head rain spouts and a domed copper roof. The area had once been a tree covered island and beside the lighthouse was the keepers home where he would have lived with his family.

However, over the years the beautiful Nottawasaga Light house has fallen into a state of despair. The Nottawasaga Lighthouse Preservation Society are on a mission to raise awareness, possibly fundraise, and most of all highlight the importance of the preservation of this historical landmark.

You can help save the Nottawasaga Lighthouse or simply find out more about this truly magnificent landmark by visiting:
