Double Bill #2
Dancemakers
Choreography by Michael Trent and K.G. Guttman
Performed by Dancemakers
Enwave Theatre, Sept. 29 to Oct. 2
Dancemakers’ Double Bill #2 continues the creative idea, which earned the company a Dora nomination for best dance production last season.
Dancemakers’ artistic director Michael Trent invites another choreographer – in this case Montreal’s K.G. Guttman – who together come up with the central idea. Both set dances on the company using the same creative team including composer Reena Katz. I saw the works at the Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa and it is an intriguing examination of show and spectacle.
Trent’s work called Show takes the more personal route focusing on how much we show of ourselves and how much is revealed to us by other people.
Guttman’s So You Think the Spectacle Does Not Love You is more exterior, looking at the public relationship between audience and performers.
These, however, are very simplistic descriptions. The shows, pardon the pun, are much more complex works by very sophisticated choreographers.
Double Bill #2 runs at the Enwave Theatre until Oct. 2.
